The Benefits of Healthy Hearing
Having good hearing has a significant effect on how you live your life. It’s important to not only focus on hearing loss, but what you benefit from when you are able to hear. Healthy hearing allows you to be better at socializing with others, be more productive on the job, and connect with family members. Hearing loss itself is not a singular disability. It affects everything that you do on a day-to-day basis. On average, most people wait between seven to 10 years before admitting that they have difficulty hearing and get a hearing aid. People are typically in denial, or they simply do not want to look old. Some experience hearing loss as a slow progression, making it difficult to notice. If you avoid getting a hearing test, and fail to treat it early. You might age faster. Hearing loss is linked to early onset dementia, early mortality, and being six times more likely to fall in contrast to people with healthy hearing abilities. Additional health problems are isolation, and less, or a complete lack of, communication with others due to not being able to hear. The consequences are loneliness - which has been shown to be just as bad as smoking 15 cigarettes each day. The brain is deprived of the ability to recognize sounds. A person who gets hearing aids will basically have to re-learn to hear with their device.
