4 Ways to Troubleshoot Your Hearing Aids

Once in a while you might have trouble with your hearing aids, since they are electronic devices. You might experience internal noises or garbled/distorted sound, complete loss of sound, or weak or intermittent amplification. All electronic devices malfunction once in a while. Your hearing care professional can assist you in troubleshooting any problems. But below are some questions you can ask yourself and ways you can troubleshoot before contacting your hearing instrument specialist:

  1. Are the hearing aids turned on? Make sure your hearing aids are turned on and the battery door is completely closed. If you have volume control, make sure the hearing aids are not set for the minimum setting or placed on mute.
  2. Is there a battery problem? Hearing aid batteries, like other batteries, are polarized--with “+” and “-”, such that they need to be seated properly. The positive pole is the flat side of the battery. If your hearing aid battery is upside down, it won’t draw power. Also, make sure you don’t have a weak or dead battery. If you need a fresh battery, remove it from the package and then remove the tab/sticker. Wait a few minutes before using the battery, so that it completely charges. Then, insert the battery.
  3. Is the hearing aid clogged? Foreign materials, oils, earwax, and moisture can accumulate on the microphone(s), tubing, and sound port of the hearing aid, negatively affecting its function. You can wipe the hearing aid with a tissue or clean, dry cloth. Or, you could use your cleaning tool or brush if you have one for your hearing aids. Also, you can clean or replace the wax guard/protection if you have it. But it is best to have a hearing instrument professional do the cleaning.
  4. Am I wearing the most appropriate program? If your hearing aids have several programs, make sure you are using the right program for the environment at hand.

However, certain types of malfunctions should be reported to your hearing instrument specialist so as to not damage your hearing aids further or void the warranty. If the above solutions do not help, contact your hearing instrument specialist at Pure Sound Hearing Aids.
