6 Modern Features Available in Hearing Aids

Technological Advancements

Cell phones have become more and more sophisticated within the last ten years. You can use it for anything from a simple phone call, to surfing the web with it. Most people have conformed to these fast advancements in technology, but so many still believe that hearing aids have yet to catch onto these technological advancements.

Imagine a hearing aid. If you are thinking about a bulky, banana-shaped device that makes a sharp, shrill noise, pops, and distorts the sound of your voice, you need to learn about the latest hearing aid technology.

Earlier models of hearing aids were very basic in contrast to modern hearing aids. Just like your phone, there has been so much progress in hearing aid technology in just the last few years. The microcircuitry and small internal pieces, allow the hearing devices to fit inside the ear easily and in a discreet manner. This provides the best comfort, and wireless communication with audio sources without using a cumbersome hearing aid.

Here is a list of features that are currently available with hearing aids:

  1. Digital Noise and Feedback Reduction. This is a typical component that administers the sharpness of a natural listening experience that is offered by modern hearing aids. Older hearing device models would essentially amplify surrounding noises with analog technology. Modern microphones translate approaching sounds into a digital signal prior to transferring it to your ears. Filtering background noises from your surroundings and speech, will allow you to appreciate the vivid sounds of nature and limit communication problems.
  2. Directional Microphones. This feature uses microphones to concentrate on sounds that are coming from the direction you are focused on. For example, a person sitting at a busy restaurant can ignore some of the conversations from those around them, while separating the sound of the individual who is speaking directly in front of them. This is particularly helpful for those who frequently need information clarified due to their hearing loss.
  3. Multiple Channels. The shape and size of a room is a huge factor in how a musician’s performance will sound. The acoustics within an environment can make it easy or difficult to comprehend speech and surrounding sounds, just as large resonant spaces absorb or suppress sounds. This is a common circumstance for those with hearing loss, if they have the tendency to hear clearly in certain rooms and not hear as well in other rooms. Because of this, hearing aids currently have multiple channels which allow the wearer to tailor their equalizer for the best quality of listening, and save that setting for the future. Instead of fumbling around to adjust your hearing aids, you can go back to the best channel and your hearing aids will automatically adapt and clarify the noise.
  4. Bluetooth® streaming & Telecoil/T-switch. Modern hearing aids allow wearers to link an endless number of audio sources using the push of a button. You can connect your hearing aids to your smartphone, computer, T.V., or another device by utilizing the Bluetooth feature and acquiring first-rate audio in phone calls, movies, etc. If you need to use your hearing aids outside of your home, there is a Telecoil, or T-switch feature, which can allow you to connect to a hearing loop installed in areas like concert halls, sports arenas, places of worship, and more.
  5. Binaural processing. When you close one of your eyes for long enough, your depth perception weakens. Seeing through both eyes lets you see the world clearly in 3D, and using each of your ears allows you to hear your environment more fully. In hearing aids, the binaural processing feature lets each device correspond with one another so that their settings can be synchronized. For example, in a windy atmosphere where the wind is only blowing into one ear, each hearing aid will address the problem by reflecting the clearer audio signal into the other unit, which will prevent miscommunications and delays.
  6. Automatic programming. This feature is only accessible in high-end hearing aids, but it is also one of the most impressive highlights on the market. This service allows a hearing aid to examine acoustic elements in a listening environment and make automated adaptations that would eliminate background noise and provide clearer sounds. Using artificial intelligence technology, or A.I., this feature studies your listening habits and way of life, while adapting in an appropriate manner so that users don’t have to worry about their hearing aids, and focus on appreciating their restored hearing.

Hopefully, this information clarified any misconceptions you may have had about the effectiveness of hearing aids.
