6 Ways to Become more Aware of Hearing Health and Communication

Communication and being able to have a connection with others is the key to a full experience in this world. Unfortunately, for some individuals, it is difficult to communicate because of hearing loss or speech limitations. Over 48 million Americans suffer from some form of hearing loss, and 1 out of 10 Americans have a communication disorder.

Here are 6 Things You can do to Raise Awareness about Hearing and Speech Problems:
  1. Make an appointment for a hearing test - Get a yearly hearing test. About 16% of primary care doctors do not routinely check for hearing loss, so if you have not had a hearing test for over a year, you should schedule a test.
  2. Do research and educate yourself - There are so many topics to learn about when it comes to hearing loss and communication disorders. In order to spread awareness, you need to research things on your own. Starkey.com is a great resource for information on real people’s experiences with hearing loss and communication disorders.
  3. Protect your hearing - When ever you go to a live concert, see fireworks, or work with power tools, you should have earplugs or earmuffs. Being exposed to noise that is over 85 decibels could result in hearing loss. This is the same decibel levels for a typical restaurant.
  4. Use a decibel app on your smartphone - By downloading a decibel app onto your smartphone, you can use it to find out how loud your environment is so that you can put on hearing protection, or go to a quieter location.
  5. Do not use cotton swabs - Using cotton swabs could rupture your eardrum. In many cases, you are actually pushing earwax further into your ears with these swabs, which could cause wax to impact in the ear canal.
  6. Spread the word - Share these tips and information to family and friends. Complete  some of the things listed here for a life full of healthier hearing.
