If you currently experience hearing loss, protect your hearing from getting worse and discover what helps you hear better.

How to Stop Your Hearing from getting Worse

Medication and surgery are not treatment options for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Hair cells that are damaged cause permanent hearing loss, so it’s very important to protect your hearing. If you experience hearing loss, here are some tips to stop or slow down the additional loss.

  • When possible, stay away from loud and noisy environments.
  • Wear ear protection. This can include earplugs, protective ear muffs, or noise-canceling headphones if you’re around loud noises.
  • Lower the volume when listening through earbuds or headphones.
  • Get your hearing tested if you suspect that you have hearing loss. Your primary care doctor probably won’t ask about your hearing health, so you need to advocate for yourself and mention your concerns. Or you can get a free hearing test and consultation from us at Pure Sound Hearing.

Consider a Device to Help You Hear

Hearing Aids

  • Hearing aids don’t simply amplify sounds, there are some that also use directional microphones to help block background noises and focus on a person who is speaking or music that is playing. Based on which way you are positioned, some hearing aid microphones will pick up sounds from the direction that you are facing. Other hearing aid microphones are omnidirectional, so sounds can be picked up from any direction. Hearing aids can be adjusted and programmed for your specific listening needs to make sounds easier to understand.

Assistive Listening Devices (ALD)

  • An assistive listening device can help you hear as you go about your daily activities. A flashing or vibrating alarm can alert you when you need to wake up, if there’s a fire in your house, or if the doorbell rings. A loop, FM, or infrared system can transmit sound to some head/earphones and hearing aids that have a telecoil (t-coil). They can help you hear the TV, movies, or meetings in public spaces, such as an auditorium.

If you or a loved one notices a change in hearing abilities, please contact us at Pure Sound Hearing for a complimentary hearing test and consultation.
