Fireworks and its Link to Hearing Loss

The Fourth of July is coming up, which should not only be a concern for those who already suffer from some degree of hearing loss, but also those who have healthy hearing abilities.

Fireworks can produce sounds that may reach between 150 to 175 decibels. Every year, people experience deterioration to their hearing health as a result of hearing fireworks displays.

2 Things to Consider when Seeing and Hearing Fireworks

  1. How far of a distance are you from the source of the noise? The sound will be less inclined to affect the health of your hearing the further away you are from the explosions.
  2. How far should you stand away from fireworks? According to the World Health
Association, adults should refrain from being exposed to noises over 140 decibels. Children should refrain from being exposed to noises over 120 decibels. If the fireworks reach 170 decibels, it would be safe for adults to stand 15 to 20 meters away; children should stand 50 to 60 meters away. Infants should not be exposed to fireworks at all, due to the fact that they experience a considerable amount of sound pressure.

What can Happen if You are exposed to Loud Sounds?

  • Tinnitus: A ringing sensation in the ears, which could be a symptom of hearing loss.
  • Temporary threshold shift: A slight decline in hearing, which can last up to 24 hours.
  • Permanent hearing loss: A shift in your hearing, that is enduring and cannot be restored.

Wear Ear Protection

Whether you are watching professional firework displays, or firing them off in your own backyard, it is strongly encouraged that you wear protection for your ears. There are two types of ear plugs that can be purchased from a local drug store, grocery store, or sporting goods store:

  1. Roll-down foam plugs, which are placed inside the ears.
  2. Headphones, which are placed over the ears. The headphones are more comfortable, easier to wear, and provide more protection.

Even though watching a fireworks display is entertaining, be careful of the dangers they present to your hearing heath.
