National Earmuff Day is recognized annually on March 13. Earmuffs are not just an article of clothing that protects your ears from frigid temperatures. They are also used as personal protection equipment (P.P.E.) - intended to block out loud noises. This day celebrates earmuffs by putting them on or providing them.
National Earmuff Day: A History On March 13, 1877, an improved version of earmuffs, which closely resemble modern earmuffs, was created by a 15-year-old named Chester Greenwood with the help of his grandmother. He couldn't keep his large ears warm during the wintertime because he was allergic to the protective wool caps featuring ear covers. These ear covers were ear protectors. One day after Greenwood went ice skating, he designed two ear-shaped loops of wire and asked his grandmother to sew clusters of beaver fur or flannel to cover the loops. The loops were attached to a wire headband. Then they worked to create a model, which turned into the first record of earmuffs ever made. Greenwood's friends made fun of him, but the earmuffs became popular. He later revised the earmuffs by switching out the wire with a band and hinging the pads. He build a factory near his hometown of Farmington, Maine, and employed several Farmington residents. He later became chair of his earmuff empire. What made Greenwood's design unique and patent-approved was a v-shaped swivel hinge that allowed the earmuffs to remain snug against the ear. This patent and factory highlighted Farmington and provided consistent employment to locals. In 1936, the earmuff factory manufactured more than 400,000 pairs.
