The High Cost of Untreated Hearing Loss

Statistics on untreated hearing loss

Hearing loss that goes untreated can lead to higher healthcare costs in the long run. Several studies have shown that getting your hearing loss treated pays off for your overall health, and from a financial perspective.

In the past there have been many established links between hearing loss and dementia, diabetes, falls, heart disease and strokes. Now, studies have shown that hearing loss that goes untreated can lead to higher costs in healthcare.

According to researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, elderly adults who do not receive treatment for their hearing loss have significantly higher costs in healthcare compared to individuals who do not experience hearing loss. That amounts to an average of 46 percent, with a total of $22,434 per person for over a decade.

A study from the University of South Carolina concluded that people with diagnosed hearing loss had 33 percent higher costs in health care than individuals who did not have hearing loss.

How does untreated hearing loss contribute to higher healthcare expenses?

The primary reason why healthcare expenses are much higher for those who do not get their hearing loss treated is due to the fact that people with hearing loss have difficulty communicating. As a result, they wait much longer than the average person to get treatment. The longer a person waits, the more difficult it is to treat the hearing loss.

Another explanation could be that the hearing impaired person did not correctly hear or understand the treatment instructions. This would postpone the healing process, which may result in more healthcare costs.

These studies bring attention to why it’s crucial to treat your hearing loss immediately. Do not allow your fears or worries to stop you from seeking help if you believe that you have hearing loss.
