Why some people do not wear hearing aids, and reasons why they should

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) claim that only 20 percent of individuals who can experience benefits from hearing aids actually wear them.

4 reasons why some people do not wear their hearing aids

There have been some accounts of individuals who have made an investment in hearing aids, but they are not using them.

  1. Improper fit - All hearing aids need to be fitted accurately. If they do not fit, they will feel uncomfortable and won’t be effective. If you wear behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids, these may fall off of your ears if the tubing that joins the aid and the earmold together are too long. If your ear molds do not fit snugly, it may cause redness or sores for your ears. Make sure you set up an appointment to talk to a hearing instrument specialist if you are experiencing any issues. They will be able to make any adjustments that are necessary.
  2. Uncertainty when dealing with technology - Hearing aids can greatly improve your life, as long as you know how to use it. If you are uncertain as to how to change your batteries or how to use an app with your smartphone, contact your hearing aid provider. They have vast knowledge and advice on these devices. They are more than happy to help whenever you need it!
  3. Inability to commit - If you only occasionally wear your hearing aids, you probably can’t hear as well as you’d like. Hearing is an activity for your brain. Your brain requires time to comprehend the sounds that are being received in the inner ear, and that depends on how severe your hearing loss is and how much time you put off before getting treatment. Using your hearing aids on a regular basis will support the stability that your brain needs in order to re-familiarize itself with noises that it has not heard for a long time. Wearing the hearing aids regularly will also allow you to learn more about how they work. As a result, you will feel comfortable and confident which will help you get the most out of your hearing aids.
  4. Ineffective - You may have had a great first experience with your hearing aids, but some time has passed and that’s no longer the case. Your hearing abilities may have changed since you were last fitted for your hearing aids, or they may need a deep clean by a professional. Let your hearing instrument specialist know about these changes and schedule an appointment with them. Get the most out of your hearing aids by being open and honest about any issues you are facing with your hearing aids.

Reasons why you should wear your hearing aids

In a recent study that was conducted in France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the UK and the US, researchers found that eight out of ten hearing aid users believed their hearing devices improved their overall quality of life. This included their home and work relationships, and a more secure feeling in safety and their independence.

Practice wearing your hearing aids

Wearing your hearing aids on a daily basis will help you be more informed about how they work, while reminding your brain about all of the sounds that it has not heard in a while. This will improve your brain and overall quality of life.

You have invested in them

You wouldn’t purchase a new car and not take it for a drive, right? Get the most out of your investment by wearing your hearing aids each day. There is a wide selection of devices whether you want something discreet, if you want something that can stream music or TV directly into your ears, or both.

Take your family and friends into consideration

When you have a healthy hearing experience, it’s easier for family and friends to have a conversation with you. When you don’t get treatment for your hearing loss, or you choose not to wear the hearing aids that you’ve purchased, it puts a heavy strain on your relationship. Discuss your hesitation about wearing hearing aids with a professional. Working with them will help give you the best possible experience in your hearing solution.
