Over the Counter Hearing Aids
Do you want to try to self-fit your own hearing aids? At Pure Sound Hearing Aids, we offer most hearing products allowed by law. Currently wearers are using non programmable PSAP's as a lower cost alternative to FDA approved programmable hearing aids. In the future, if hearing aid laws change, wearers may be able to buy programmable hearing aids over the counter. We do have our concerns about over the counter hearing aids though.
Programmable, over the counter hearing aids would only being recommended for basic hearing losses. Right now, these basic aids are already available for about $800 to $1600, including professional fitting and follow up care. Over the counter hearing aids are unlikely to be much less, and would not include professional service.
When considering over the counter hearing aids, ask yourself a few questions before investing too much money.
We will always offer all available devices for all budgets at Pure Sound. However, sensorineural hearing loss is complicated and requires a professionally fit device for the best short and long term results. If you try to self-fit hearing aids and are not happy, please do not give up! Call a hearing aid provider and you will hear a big difference.

- How do I know what level of hearing loss I have?
- Where do I get them serviced?
- How do I know if it's sensorineural, mixed, or conductive hearing loss? Why does that matter?
- What is the shape of my hearing loss? Why is that important when choosing venting?
- Will a hearing aid fix the problem or do I have an acoustic neuroma (tumor)?
- Do I need hearing aids or a different medical treatment?
- How do I do wax maintenance and when?
- How do I look in my ears? What do I look for? Why am I looking?
- Am I willing and able to invest a fair amount of time into learning about hearing and hearing aids?
