4 Lesser-known Causes of Hearing Loss

We are all aware that exposure to loud noises, genetic factors, and diet can cause hearing loss, but here are some other known causes of hearing loss.

Over an extended period of time, these conditions and habits can cause hearing loss:

  1. Deficiency of iron - According to researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, those with iron-deficient anemia and hearing loss are twice as likely to develop hearing loss than those without this blood condition. It is inconclusive as to whether a lack of iron in your diet causes hearing loss, but it is evident that this mineral is crucial in providing a healthy surplus of blood. Leafy greens or iron supplements can be added to your diet to counter this deficiency.
  2. Mumps - Cases of the mumps have made a comeback across the country due to misinformation about vaccinations in general. It was formerly a childhood disease that was eradicated but has now seen a steady increase in cases. Hearing loss is just one of many health problems caused by mumps. It is very contagious and can lead to permanent damage to the cochlea, and cause hearing loss. Just 1-4 percent of infected individuals have had hearing problems. Healthcare providers recommend immunizing children who are 12-15 months old. Measles, which is also seeing an increase in cases, may also cause similar problems with hearing health.
  3. Overconsumption of alcohol - After a long, stressful day it’s easy to find comfort and relaxation in an alcoholic beverage. But over-drinking can lead to health problems. Too much alcohol can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. As a result, your hearing health can be affected. Alcohol use can harm the central auditory cortex. This can cause your brain to work harder and longer to process sound, which can lead to listening fatigue. The ability to hear low-frequency sounds can also be compromised, as it can interrupt equilibrium as alcohol mixes in with the inner ear fluids.
  4. Sleep apnea - This is when you chronically snore and stop breathing in your sleep for 10 seconds at a time or more. Anyone who has this sleeping problem can be at risk of diabetes, heart disease, or strokes. Hearing loss is a rare side effect of this disorder. The cause is indefinite, but researchers think it may be due to poor levels of oxygen that reduce the blood flow to the inner ears, which can lead to permanent damage to the tiny hair cells that are needed for hearing.

Even though these causes of hearing loss are uncommon, it’s still important to be aware of them to keep you and your loved ones safe.
