6 Reasons to Focus on the Good Side of Hearing Loss

The negative parts of hearing loss are obvious: You can’t hear well, or at all. This can lead to miscommunication and frustration in your daily life.

There can be a positive side to this.

  1. Do you notice that you carefully listen more often? You don’t have a choice but to listen carefully. Focusing on what others are saying is necessary, otherwise, you won’t understand them. People who hear normally can multitask - which may not be a good thing. When you listen more carefully, you are more likely to get the message.
  2. You are more perceptive and sympathetic. Being aware of hearing loss, the reality of living with it, and how it affects human behavior and mental health is a step towards recognizing how others handle difficulties that are different from your own.
  3. You have something to advocate for. The previous reasons may provide more desire for diversity, equality, and inclusiveness in the world. Living with hearing loss gives you a platform to fight for these basic needs.
  4. You become better at problem-solving. You adapt by looking for alternative options when you are in a difficult living situation. This can be challenging. It’s tempting to just get angry, or want to give up and sulk, but instead, you make it work. Make modifications to your environment, use assistive listening devices, hearing aids, talk-to-text apps, and simply remind others what you need from them.
  5. You have better communication skills. This doesn’t automatically come with hearing loss. Simply understanding that you need to communicate better with others does not ensure it. Sometimes people with hearing loss are also guilty of what hearing people are often accused of: mumbling, not talking so it’s easy to see your face, ignoring others. Patience, practice, and problem-solving should improve communication skills.
  6. Find happiness in the things you can hear and understand. Have a better appreciation for the sounds of life. Hearing aids are not perfect, and cannot restore hearing, but when you can hear things like sounds of nature or your favorite music, be grateful. Enjoy the moment.

These are only a few of the “benefits” of hearing loss. Think about the positive things that have happened to you since you experienced hearing loss. If you’re struggling with hearing loss, remember that acceptance is key. Learn how to navigate your way through this by reading more information from our blogs, and joining a support group - there are several online resources.

If you or a loved one are experiencing hearing loss and need a hearing test, please contact us at Pure Sound Hearing for a complimentary hearing test and consultation.
