We’re winding down towards the end of summer, and the heatwave has felt relentless. In addition to the heat, humidity and moisture can warp the wiring and affect the performance of your hearing aids. Follow these simple tips to make sure you are getting the most out of your hearing aids.

7 Tips to Enhance the Efficiency of Your Hearing Aids

  1. Keep your hearing aids stored in a cool, dry place. Do not leave them in a car or in direct sunlight.
  2. Use accessories like a dry-aid kit or dehumidifier to absorb sweat and moisture from your hearing aids when they are out of your ears. Ask your hearing instrument specialist about what options are available, and which ones they would recommend for your specific needs and hearing aids. Remember, do not place any rechargeable hearing aids in a heated drying unit.
  3. If water comes in contact with your hearing aids, it can cause the devices to malfunction. Most hearing aids have a water-resistant coating, but none are waterproof. In other words, it can handle sweat but should not be submerged in a body of water. Dry off your ear canals before putting your hearing aids on. Do not insert Q-Tips or anything smaller than your finger into your ear canal.
  4. Sunscreen and insect repellant are frequently used during this time of the year, but these sprays can wind up obstructing the microphones and receivers. Put these lotions and sprays on prior to donning your hearing aids. Wash the lotion and spray residue off of your hands before handling your hearing aids, and use a professional-grade cleaning wipe to clean your hearing aids after removing them from your ears.
  5. If you are planning to go on any rides at an amusement park, be aware that sudden jerking movements can loosen your hearing aids and cause them to fall out. Remove the devices, then store them in a safe place before getting on any rides.
  6. Hearing aids are very durable, but the wiring can become damaged if the devices fall on a hard surface. Minimize the chances of losing your balance and falling by making sure your footwear is properly fit and appropriate for your day.
  7. If you notice any problems with your hearing aids such as distorting sounds, static, or any irregularities inform your hearing instrument specialist.
