There are services and protections for those with hearing loss. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the ADA Amendment Act of 2008 make it illegal for employers to discriminate against those who have disabilities, like hearing loss for instance. Before these laws, discrimination was common.
Social activism paved the way. The 504 sit-In in 1977 helped make it possible. When the government failed to meet a deadline, planned protests arose around the country. The San Francisco protest was the most effective. There was also a protest in Washington, D.C. The protests gained lots of media attention until laws were passed to protect people with hearing loss, as well as protect those people with other disabilities. The civil rights of people with disabilities are now guaranteed. If you need help concerning hearing loss, please contact your hearing instrument specialist at Pure Sound Hearing Aids.
