When is it Time to Replace Your Hearing Aids?

Modern hearing aids are more advanced and intricate than they were before. They use state-of-the-art computer processors, microelectronics and wireless radios. They are designed and programmed to strict requirements in order to provide the user with the best possible hearing experience. Some of these devices, like Starkey’s Livio AI, feature a moisture resistant coating that repels dirt, dust, moisture, water and wax. 

Even with these advanced features, hearing aids can still malfunction and parts may still need to be replaced.       

If you wear your hearing aids every day from dusk until dawn, as they should be worn, they may come in contact with elements of the earth (rain, pollen), along with some other chemicals that you may use on your body (hair spray, lotion, or makeup), or oils and sweat from your own body.  

In addition to all of this, hearing aids sometimes fall to the ground, if they’re not in a case they get knocked around in your bag or purse, or the wires get twisted when putting them on or removing them. You put them through the wringer, yet they usually continue performing for you. 

The Lifespan of Hearing Aids

Normally, hearing aids that are regularly cleaned and properly maintained last about five years. This care includes a check up and thorough cleaning at least every six months. 

During those five years, hearing aid devices will most likely need to be repaired. After they’ve reached five years, it’s important to think about investing in a new pair of hearing aids or getting the old ones repaired. Even the sturdiest hearing aids available will eventually break down from daily usage and exposure.

Advancements in Hearing Aid Technology Frequently Improve 

Just like other technology (smartphones, TV, computers) new hearing aids aren’t just more reliable, but the technology improves year after year. That indicates that the sound quality is better, distinguishing multiple sounds from one another will be easier, there will be more advances in Bluetooth® technology, more options for accessories, and features that make daily life easier. 

Regularly investing in new hearing aids allows users to have reliable hearing, which improves your overall health, and reduces isolation which can lead to depression.
